Sam Smith has claimed a number one spot for his song for the upcoming James Bond film, Spectre. The song, Writings On The Wall, was the first number one of a theme in the 53 year history of the Bond’s film franchise. Smith beat Justin Bieber’s latest record What Do You Mean to the number one slot.
In an interview with Radio 1’s Greg James, Smith said the fact that the song was number one was absolutely crazy.
“Out of all the songs I’ve brought out in my life, I was not expecting this to even chart in the top 10, let alone number one,” Smith said. “It’s unbelievable.”
This is Smith’s fifth number one hit in the UK. His previous number ones include Lay Me Down, Stay With Me, and La La La, a collaboration with the DJ and producer Naughty Boy.
Previous performers of Bond theme songs include Sir Paul McCartney, Adele, Sir Tom Jones and Dame Shirley Bassey.
Smith’s song debuted on Radio 1’s Breakfast Show on 25 September to mixed reactions.
Separately, the act that helped propel Smith to international fame, Disclosure, had a number one on the album chart, with their most recent record Caracal. Smith features on the album as a vocalist on the song Omen.
Spectre is released in the UK on 26 October.
