Frivolity

I never knew that! With Kettle Sex & Relationships Editor, Emmi Bowles

At Kettle Mag the editors remain hidden away in Kettle towers occupying themselves with ideas, proofing, tweeting and keeping their ears tuned to the latest news. But what do we know about these busy creatures? Here at frivolity over the coming weeks we intend to find out…and this week we cosy up with Sex and Relationships Editor, Emmi Bowles.

My parents don’t know this about me but…

Anything my parents don’t know about me won’t be on the internet.

When someone says the word kettle, what is the first thing that springs to mind?

Tea, lots and lots of yummy tea.

How long after you wake up do you check your phone?

I check my phone as soon as I wake up to get rid of any emails or notifications. I need to start the day fresh and that includes no notifications flashing on my phone.

Stranded on a desert island you wouldn’t be without…

A guide on how to survive on a desert island.

What is the most revolting food you’ve ever eaten?

I don’t usually eat food that I don’t like but celery just makes me want to be sick, even the smell of it sends me funny.

Being the editor of Sex and Relationships section at Kettle Mag, do you find your friends come to you for advice on the subject?

In my friendship group I am the one who has been in a relationship the longest so I normally give them advice… even if they don’t want it I throw in my two cents.

Do your friends share stories happily with you or do they worry they might find themselves in print?

The majority of the time my friends will tell me something and we will either end up talking about it on the student radio or I beg them to write an article for me.

If you couldn’t edit the Sex and Relationship section for Kettle, which section would you choose?

The books section. I am a huge bookworm and I run my own book blog.

Which friend that you met at uni is likely to be at your 60th birthday party?

Abi Donoghue. We have two radio shows together and we started talking before we went to university. She has made university so much more fun for me and every time we are together we end up laughing or singing.

Abi and Emmi -friends for life, not just for a radio show.

Wine or beer?

Does tea count? I am not a big drinker and I only drink wine on special occasions, when I go out I am a vodka person.

Cat or dog?

Dogs forever. I had a collie when I was younger and have always wanted dogs ever since.

Football or rugby?

I don’t really have a choice in the matter. My boyfriend is a massive Manchester United fan so I now have to know all the players and the off side rule… football is hard to learn about!

iphone or Android?

Iphone all the way. I have mostly apply products and can’t wait to get a Macbook.

Apart from writing, what other creative talents do you have?

I love to read and write stories, but I also play the guitar. I have been playing since I was around 7 and although I’m not the best I taught myself all the chords and some songs.

If you were a punctuation mark, what would you be?

I would be speech marks because I never shut up!

What is your most unappealing habit?

I am really OCD when it comes to things being in their place. If you put a glass or can of coke on the very edge of the table I will move it to the middle. I get so paranoid about things going wrong.

What would you like to be remembered for?

I would like to be remembered for my hard work. When I start a project I put all of my effort into it. I have spent countless hours trying to make my projects better and hope that it is noticeable.

Have you ever volunteered for anything?

I currently volunteer for student media. I run two radio shows. I also was the Editor of my student newspaper for a few months and the features and online editor last year.

Issue of student paper when Emmi Bowles was Editor.

Emmi edited her student paper

I have also taken part in Race for Life and raised over £100.

Who so far, family or otherwise has influenced you in your life?

My Grandad, who passed away 9 years ago, has always been a big influence on me. He was the reason I went to a grammar school and he always pushed me to do what I love. I like to think he is proud of how far I have come.

Which emoji do you use most frequently?

I rarely use emoji’s but it would have to be a winky face. Always making jokes me.

What was the last song you listened to on your ipod/phone?

Light it up by Major Lazer

What is your most over used word or expression?

I don’t think I can share that just in case children are reading this.

What keeps you awake at night?

Normally my noisy neighbours at university, but also Netflix.
