Frivolity

I never knew that! With Kettle Editor Kealie Mardell

At Kettle Mag the editors remain hidden away in Kettle Towers occupying themselves with ideas, proofing, tweeting, and keeping their ears tuned to the latest news. But what do we know about these busy creatures? Here at frivolity over the coming weeks we intend to find out…starting with our very own Deputy Editor, Kealie Mardell.

My parents don’t know this about me but…

Anything my parents don’t know won’t be being published online I’m afraid!

What is your favourite word that rhymes with Kettle?

Metal. Anyone who knows me will know that I am a huge metal head who feels most at home listening to the likes of Slipknot.

How long after you wake up do you check your phone?

It’s the first thing I do in the morning because if I don’t I miss the chance to talk to my fiancé. He’s in California and working around the time difference means lots of late nights and early mornings!

Stranded on a desert island you wouldn’t be without…

My Kindle…I just hope the battery lasts long enough for somebody to come rescue me!

What is the most revolting food you’ve ever eaten?

Vegetables. All vegetables are the devil’s food.

If you weren’t Deputy Editor which section of KettleMag would you like to edit?

I love my position as Deputy Editor because I get to see behind the scenes of every section. If I had to pick one I would either return to Music or take on Women!

Which friend that you met at uni is likely to be at your 60th birthday party?

Can only be one answer to this and she knows exactly who she is. We met on our first day at uni and have just graduated after four incredible years together, including an unforgettable time on study abroad!

Studying abroad in Long Beach, California

Wine or beer?

If you check out some of my articles you’ll find the answer to this one!

Cat or dog?

I’m one of those annoying people who says both, sorry devoted cat and dog lovers everywhere!

Football or rugby?

I’d have to say rugby as it’s the lesser of two evils. Either way, you won’t ever catch me playing, and if I’m watching it’s just because I happen to be in a pub!

Android or iphone?

Android FTW.

Apart from writing, what other creative talents do you have?

Does reading count?

If you were a punctuation mark, what would you be?

A semi colon, because my story isn’t over yet.

What is your most unappealing habit?

Probably my incessant need to correct other people’s spelling and grammar (sorry not sorry).

What would you like to be remembered for?

Something that made you smile!

Have you ever volunteered for anything?

I’ve done a lot of volunteering, including student media, Raise and Give, with local charities, and to help raise awareness of mental health and invisible disabilities. I’d love to be able to devote more of my time to good causes and it’s something I hope I don’t ever give up on.

Who so far, family or otherwise, has influenced you in your life?

Everyone draws their influence from a variety of places, be that the people in your life, in history, in the media, or within literature. I like to think that all those bits of inspiration come together to make you the person you are.

Which emoji do you use most frequently?

😛 – For when I don’t want to seem too serious (but probably was anyway).

What was the last song you listened to on your ipod/phone?

‘Servilia’ by our Band of the Week, War on Women.

What is your most over used word or expression?

Smash the patriarchy.

What keeps you awake at night?

I’ll stop reading soon…just one more page…or maybe the end of this chapter…or the next one…
