A review of the stars’ styles at the Met Ball

There was the usual mixed-batch at this year’s Met Ball, held May 6. 2013′s theme was Punk: Chaos to Couture. While there were many beautiful dresses showcased, my top picks are the looks which manage to channel the punk theme best.

Current ‘It’ girl, Cara Delevinge, certainly didn’t disappoint. Her studded, plunging-neck lined Burberry dress, ear rings and smokey eyes didn’t scream punk—they enunciated it beautifully as haute couture should.

Also on my hit list is Michelle Dockery. Her snakeskin midi cocktail dress was sophistically understated.

Right now it seems Anne Hathaway can do no wrong when it comes to outfit choices, so you’ll not be surprised she also features in my top ten. Her pixie cut only enhanced her classy punk look.

Also rocking the crop was Miley Cyrus. Her fishnet maxi and spikey ‘do was one of the most genuinely punk-rock looks of the night.

We also cannot forget Florence Welsh. It was no surprise she would shine with this theme. Her outfit which heavily featured feathers was oh-so gothic-chic.

Blake Lively was also working feathers. Her dress was super glamorous yet subtly dark.

Emma Watson’s look may not be innately punky but the black bandage dress was too beautiful not to get a mention.

Taylor Swift also did not disappoint with her luxurious mesh and jewel black gown. The edgy full-side cut-outs kept her look youthful and on trend.

Carey Mulligan‘s look was one of the more understated. Nonetheless, she channelled this year’s theme effortlessly with her black ensemble and oversized safety pin brooch.

The hit couple of the night had to be Sienna Miller and her boyfriend Tom Sturridge. Her heavy use of studs and ear rings and his worker boots showed they really got the punk look. Unlike some people…

Like every red carpet event, there is bound to be a few turkeys. The person who probably takes the biscuit this year is Sarah Jessica Parker. Her outfit was as bizarre as it was tacky.

Then we have Madonna. Yikes! Madge looks utterly desperate as she attempts to flaunt her body by forgetting to wear trousers.

When a dress looks bad on Beyoncé, there is most certainly no hope for anyone else in it. Unfortunately that was the case with Mrs Carter’s bed sheet inspired ensemble. It did nothing for her phenomenal figure.

Kim Kardashian also neglected to dress for her figure. The heavily pregnant celebrity looked enormous in her hideous floral gown.

The usually glamorous Gwyneth Paltrow definitely failed on the style-front this year. Her vastly oversized, sickly pink number was just ghastly.

Marion Cotillard also missed the mark in her oddly-shaped, oddly-coloured frock. She looked drab and washed out; certainly NOT punk.

Then we have Lily Cole. Did she just wrap herself in tissue paper? I think so.

While it was by no means ugly, the outfit that was most disappointing to me was Anna Wintour’s. As the editor of US Vogue and the night’s host, surely Ms Wintour would have got the memo about the punk theme? Her white floral gown suggests otherwise.

So that’s it—all over for another year. Now we must wait until next year’s creations are unveiled so we can equally judge them.
