BBC Music Awards 2015

We know the BBC is very passionate about the music industry. With a variety of BBC radio stations, there’s something for every listener. And on Thursday 10th December, that was proved at the BBC Music Awards, held in Birmingham’s Genting Arena.

Celebrating everything music at the BBC, hosting the awards were former BBC Radio 1 DJ, Fearne Cotton, and BBC Radio 2 presenter, Chris Evans.

One Direction

Kicking off the awards night was One Direction. Yes, the X Factorcreated boyband who said (and keep saying) that they’re going on a hiatus, although when that is I have no idea! I’ve lost count of the number of times they’ve said this is their last performance, then they appear on yet another TV show. However, they certainly got the crowds going, so much so that I could hardly hear them singing (not always a bad thing). The Directioners were louder than the lads themselves, but it got everyone in the party mood.

There were five awards to be given out to artists, and the first to receive an award was Taylor Swift. Yes, good old Tay Tay won herself the award for International Artist of the Year. Sadly she couldn’t be at the event, but she was very grateful for winning nonetheless – adding how heavy the golden mic trophy was, she seemed thrilled to receive it.

The best of the music industry

Of course, the show could have been a whole lot shorter with just the five awards, but the BBC wanted to showcase the best of today’s music industry. Both the live and TV audiences were lucky enough to see the likes of Ellie Goulding and Stereophonics perform some of their best songs.

The next award was for BBC Live Performance of the Year. When it came to winning this award I was thinking more along the lines of Hozier or James Bay, but no, I was wrong. The winning artist was Adele of all people. Yes, the lovely, talented artist that is Adele won this award for her performance of Adele at the BBC. She’s only been back on the scene for a few weeks, yet alone a year. Little did I expect her to also win Best British Artist, beating Ed Sheeran, Years & Years, and Florence and The Machine.

Song of the Year

BBC music listeners were able to vote for their Song of the Year, choosing from the likes of ‘Bloodstream’ by Ed Sheeran, ‘Hold My Hand’ by Jess Glynne, ‘Uptown Funk’ by Mark Ronson ft Bruno Mars, and ‘Cheerleader ( Felix Jaehn Remix)’ by OMI. You can see the full shortlist here. After witnessing some live performances from a few of these artists during the awards, my mind was torn between two artists.

And as it turned out, the Song of the Year was won by Hozier with ‘Take Me To Church’, doing it justice at the awards as he had the audience in the palm of his hands, especially as he was accompanied by the BBC Orchestra.

New talent

The BBC are famous for introducing new artists to the industry, and have been responsible for bringing out much of the best in new music. This brought us nicely to the BBC Music Introducing Artist of the Year, which was won by Jack Garratt.

After a night of awards, the BBC finished the night off with a performance from the one and only Rod Stewart. Perhaps not my cup of musical tea, but fans enjoyed it regardless.
